“This Is Not An App” is a sculpture installation made of hundreds of plastic display phones collected over the course of a year. The show explores the anxiety we have about our cell phones and how we relate to them physically and emotionally. It is not a statement about the negative or positive effects of smartphones on our modern social life, but rather an exploration of our relationship with cell phones as physical objects. The interactive pieces engage the viewer’s relationship to their own phone: the fear of dropping it, losing it, the comfort of holding it. The artists invite the audience to satisfy their morbid curiosity and confront their fears by taking part in the destruction of these display phones, which serve as substitutes for their own.
