“A rebirth always implies some sort of evolution.

Repeating the act to kill a part of the self, a person experiences evolution. To repeat means to evolve. This signifies that the repetition of death allows for the birth of a new – hopefully more aware – self. In the dark chamber of someone’s reflecting thoughts, it is possible to catch a glimpse of memories, desires, and ambivalent volitions. Everything is impermanent and evanescent.

The project was born in Edinburgh in January 2020. Varun Kataria and Federica Adriani were in Scotland for an exchange program. Coming from their respective backgrounds of photography and poetry, they sought to combine words with different ways of viewing reality.

For the photos, they used a Canon AE-1 Camera with three rolls of Ilford HP5 Plus 35mm film. The poems are all written by Federica, originating from her study of and reflection upon the developed photographs. The photos are taken by Varun. Photos featuring Varun were taken by Federica. Photos of both Federica and Varun were taken by Natalie Siejczuk.

They started by working on transposing the reality they live in. Observing from an oblique perspective helped them in reinterpreting images and impressions of the world around us. They chose their close friends in Edinburgh – as well as themselves – as models, giving an intimate quality to their work. Undertaking the project they found themselves changed: they had been born again.”
